Midwinter's day is December 21st, in the Northern hemisphere.
Ignoring the effect of the atmosphere, it would be the day on which the Northern hemisphere was cooling at it its fastest rate, but not the last day on which it was cooling. This would carry on for some time, until the days became long enough for cooling to be reversed.
Therefore, 'midwinter' is only an astronomically correct term for December 21st. An atmosphereless Earth would experience most of its coldest days after December 21st.
All of this is still roughly true with an atmosphere, and the conclusion is empirically true in most years at Britain's position on the globe.
I'm happy with the traditional definition of (the Northern) winter as December, January and February.

One year, I had two phone conferences including a bloke in Helsinki.
By coincidence, one was when Helsinki was the coldest capital is Europe, at -30 something, and the other when it was the hottest, +30 something.
